Whistler's Ben Chaddock finished just off the podium in one of the early races of this year's B.C. Superweek, helping his Garnear-Quebecor squad to a strong start to the stretch of cycling races in the Lower Mainland.

Chaddock finished fourth in the Brenco Criterium on Saturday, July 5, which was the second race of the three-day Tour de Delta. He was part of a sprint finish to the line, finishing just off the wheel of winner Shane Kline from SmartStop.

Garneau-Quebecor had a rider on the podium all three days of the Tour de Delta, as Chaddock's teammate Pierrick Naud placed third in both the MK Delta Criterium on July 4 and the UCI race held July 6.

Fellow Whistler pro Will Routley is riding a reduced Superweek schedule this year, but posted a ninth-place finish in the UCI race. His Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies team also started off the event with a bang, as Jesse Anthony won the UCI race, and Ryan Anderson finished as the runner-up in both the Brenco Crit and UCI race.

The Superweek schedule runs until July 13. Check back next week for a full wrap of the event.

KOVARIK CLAIMS PHAT WIN

Chris Kovarik got back to the top step of the podium when the Phat Wednesday race series presented by Kokanee resumed in the Whistler Mountain Bike Park on July 2.

Kovarik claimed the victory in the open men's class by posting the fastest time of the night overall, conquering a course featuring Funshine Rolly Drops, Smoke and Mirrors, Blueseum, Wednesday Night Delight and B-Line in two minutes, 44.25 seconds.

Remy Metailler rode into second place, clocking in four seconds off Kovarik's time. Denis Courchesne grabbed third spot.

Among the master male riders, it was Steve Storey who took the win, finishing in 2:55.78. Adam Billinghurst was less than two seconds behind in the runner-up spot, while Craig Wilson claimed third.

Claire Buchar continued her dominance of the women's division with another win last week, finishing in 3:00.45. Lula Darquier was six seconds back while placing second, and third place went to Christina Chappetta.

Finn Iles topped a competitive junior men's field with a time of 2:54.86. Bracken Camilleri earned runner-up honours and Henrique Mathias finished third.

Georgia Astle (3:19.65) was the top junior female, followed by Stephanie Denroche and Wynnie Tipton.

The series resumed July 9 after press time. Check back next week for results.

SIRENS STOP BETTIES IN SEA TO SKY BATTLE

Whistler's Black Diamond Betties were bested by their corridor rivals last weekend as they squeezed in one more bout before the end of the season.

Squamish's Sea to Sky Sirens emerged with a 178-145 win over the Betties when the two teams squared off Saturday, July 5, in a bout at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre, billed as "Summer Shovin'." The match was a tight one until the Sirens started to pull away late in the second half.

Although the bout season is now over, the Betties are busy recruiting skaters for next year. The team will be running its Raw Meat and Fresh Meat camps for prospective new players between July 13 and Aug. 24 at Spring Creek Community School.

WORCA'S WONDER WOMAN THIS WEEKEND

WORCA's annual all-female race is set for this weekend — Wonder Woman takes place Saturday, July 12, offering a five-stage test on trails scattered around the resort.

Racers can use just one bike, but will see the full gamut of terrain types Whistler has to offer, with one downhill stage, one cross-country leg, an enduro section, a flat time trial and uphill climb.

The fourth annual women's-only race is limited to 200 riders. Visit www.worca.com for full details and course maps.
