After more than a decade of community service in Whistler, Whistler Chamber of Commerce president Thelma Johnstone is moving on.

In her place, WCC chair John Nadeau and the board of directors has hired Brent Leigh as the chamber’s new president.

Leigh has a Masters degree in Communications and, in addition to having run his own business, has held senior project and corporate planning positions in organizations such as Daon Developments, Expo 86, and Credit Union Central of B.C.

He moved to Whistler seven years ago to pursue an interest in writing and in that time he has served as a regional director for the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District, and economic development officer for the municipality of Squamish.

In recent months, Leigh has contributed to the Resort Municipality’s sustainability initiative, and has published a book, The More: A Journey to Sustainability.

Chamber members and members of the community can meet Leigh at the February Luncheon and extraordinary general meeting of the Whistler Chamber of Commerce on Feb. 20.

The WCC is comprised of more than 600 local businesses, and is entering a new phase in its development. The board believes that Leigh can provide administrative leadership to help align the organization with the opportunities facing the community, such as the Olympics and the sustainability initiative.
