Interfaith Chapel steps up a gear Whistler’s Interfaith Chapel and Meeting Place is gradually taking shape around all of the different roles it seeks to encompass. At a meeting of the steering committee and honorary board on Saturday, Sept. 26 some of these roles were tentatively examined along with the increased fund-raising needed. Proposed as a 10,000 square feet structure on two levels located on Blackcomb Way, the chapel is set to provide religious space for several faiths and a mid-week day care upstairs, as well as a teen centre, seniors drop-in and a community group office service in the basement. Now there are proposals to incorporate double walls and sealed doors for the purpose of soundproofing music and artistic spaces and rehearsal rooms. The initial budget for the building was $3.1 million. With the inclusion of artistic facilities and performance space the budget has increased to an estimated $5 million. The arts have been welcomed into the campaign with a recognition of their shared goals within the community. "The Community Arts Council and the remnants of the Society for Business and the Arts have come on board," says chapel board member Stephen Milstein. "We are looking at the sanctuary as a full performance venue." This means that in addition to the proposed rehearsal spaces in the lower level of the structure, the upstairs room of worship, or sanctuary, could also be used to stage for theatre and other performances. As yet, the arts space and the ramifications of these proposals are still under discussion, as are the suggestions for fund-raising.
