Chasse au Tresor ends bike park season on a social note

During the Phat Wednesday downhill series events, it was a big deal to place in the top 10 — especially in the Open Men's category where some races had close to 150 racers. But with those kinds of numbers, maybe 20 riders would go in expecting to win — the other hundred or so, depending on the race, were there for the fun of it.

The now fourth annual Chasse au Tresor scavenger hunt in the Whistler Mountain Bike Park — taking place this Oct. 12 — is an event that's made for riders who are in it for the fun. It's not about being the fastest (although riding fast can help your cause), it's about finding a partner or three and solving a series of puzzles in the mountain bike park.

Each team — two or four — will start off with a clue to take them to their first location, where they'll find a poster with information on what to do at that location and where to go next. Some locations have activities or puzzles, others will be checkpoints.

To ensure teams are making each location, they'll have to submit an Instagram photo and mark it with the event's hashtag. This is also an opportunity: the team with the best picture from the day will win a prize.

Team members must stay together at all times, and every Instagram photo has to have at least half of the team members, plus a visible plate number.

The cost of taking part is $10 — providing you have a lift ticket or pass (discounted tickets are $16 for particpants) — plus $25 for the annual after party and turkey dinner at the GLC, which includes a triple-header movie premiere. SecondBase films will be premiering ARRIVAL for the second year. As well participants will see a new Summer of Summit film and Ecuador by SheGNARnigans.

Pre-registration is available online (www.whistlerbike.com) or in person at Whistler Blackcomb Guest Relations.

There are prizes for the winner, including bike park passes for 2014, and all the participants are eligible to win draw prizes from bike park sponsors.
