Being a kid just got better with non-stop fun packed into the 24 th annual Whistler Children’s Art Festival July 14 and 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Creekside.
The Whistler Arts Council festival touts a multitude of arts and crafts workshops, wild mainstage performances, zany roving characters and free activities.
Old favourites and soon to be new favourites return to the Scotiabank Workshop series.
Kids gets hands-on opportunities with a paddle carving, bear-paw shirt printing, cartoon drawing, photo snapping, painting and magic workshops. The festival also gets the performing juices flowing with jazz, musical theatre, karaoke and acting classes.
New workshops to look forward to this year include the Whistler Museum’s Lego Building Competition, Rogers’ Chocolates’ strawberry bouquet making and the Caring Kidz Club fairy making.
Workshop registration takes place July 9 to 12 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Whistler Arts Council office located behind the post office in Marketplace. Workshops fill up quickly, so early registration is recommended.
When not singing and dancing, kids can leave the experts to the entertainment. The mainstage lineup showcases everything from circus acts and Brazilian music to African drumming and storytelling.
Acts include Ache Brasil, Art Napoleon, Circus Fungus, The Kids on the Block, Black Swade, The Blues Berries, Bobs & Lolo Musical Adventures, Ishtar, The Kostaman Trio, Kunaka, Magic Show 2 Go, Rick Scott, Stephen Vogler, Ta Daa Lady and Zany Zack.

LUNA hits the dirt with Dual fun
It’s all about living out the days when dual slalom ruled the mountain bike track.
Get ready to ride into this favourite pastime at the Late and Unique Nighttime Alternatives (LUNA) Dual Slalom on Friday, June 22 from 7 to 9 p.m. on Whistler Mountain.
“This event is sure to be a hit with everyone from seasoned riders who remember the good old days of dual slalom to beginners keen to check out the bike scene and compete in a friendly event,” said organizer Marc Zurbuchen. “In the memory of the heyday of dual slalom, we’ll be giving away prizes for the raddest ’80s and ’90s outfits.”
The event challenges racers to compete side by side on a dual slalom, two identical courses riders run at the same time.
Riders of all abilities are invited to compete in beginner and advance trials on the course of gentle downhill and gated turns. Prizes from Fanatyk Co., Evolution, Summit and others will be awarded to the top three times in each category.
Advance registration begins on Monday, June 18 at the Whistler Employment Resource Centre as well as at local biking events such as Phat Wednesday Downhill Races and WORCA’s Thursday Loonie Races.
