Close shave raises $6,500 for cancer research

Balding for Dollars, the fund-raising event for cancer research and education held locally at the Garibaldi Lift Company, raised $6,500 this past weekend.

Balding for Dollars, the fund-raising event for cancer research and education held locally at the Garibaldi Lift Company, raised $6,500 this past weekend.

Twenty heads were shaved in the two-hour event, including a "Hairfarmers harvest" which saw local musicians Guitar Doug and Grateful Greg Reamsbottom – better known as The Hairfarmers – lose their beards.

All kinds of hair was lopped off to raise funds for the Vancouver Children’s Hospital cancer ward, courtesy staff at the Blackcomb Hair Shoppe in Function Junction.

Families and friends also collected pledges for the event.

In between Hairfarmer sets, the harvest took place.

"It was good ol’ fashioned clean fun," says Reamsbottom.

"But the fuzz will be back in a few weeks anyways."

Prize giveaways at the event included River of Golden Dreams trips from Whistler Outdoor Experience, ski accessories from Summit Ski, and a golf pass for two to Nicklaus North.

Dave Clark and Huey Tollet, who organized this year’s inaugural Balding For Dollars in Whistler, say they hope to involve the high school next year, as well as Whistler hockey teams.

Clark and Tollett extend thanks to the Harifarmers, the GLC, Delta Whistler Resort, Summit Ski and Board, Whistler-Blackcomb, Nicklaus North Golf Course, Pemberton Trails Steakhouse, Fairmont Chateau Whistler Resort, and the Meadow Park Sports Centre.

In Squamish, which has held Balding For Dollars for a few years, $27,800 was raised.
