Club Cuts

This week on the Whistler club scene

By Shelley Arnusch

U.K. DJ Ali B is back in the Kitchen this weekend.

The turntablist from London’s Fabric club will be mixing up funky breakbeat concoctions at Tommy Africa’s Soul Kitchen Sunday club night.

Ali B (not to be confused with comic Sacha Baron Cohen’s dough-headed club-goer parody Ali G) is a frequent visitor to Whistler, last logging a set at the 2005 World Ski & Snowboard Festival’s Smirnoff Experience extended hour party at the conference centre.

Ali B should also not be confused with DJ Ali Baba. The VanCity spinner and Beat 94.5 FM personality will man the decks at Tommy’s on Saturday night along with DJ Jial-14.

The duo will throw down old school and new-school hip-hop hits and R&B club bangers for the club’s Crankworx party, which will feature a visit from festival sponsor Jim Beam’s party crew.

Fort Knox funks up Jungle Love

Breaks, breaks and more fat breaks.

DJ Jon H from the funky Fort Knox Five crew out of Washington D.C. returns to Whistler on Tuesday for a special breaks edition of the weekly Jungle Love club night.

The night normally focuses solely on jungle and drum ’n’ bass music but the DnB heads will forgive Jungle Love’s Jamie Tobin for breaking up their routine just this once. Jon H has thrown down some memorable sets in Whistler, both at Soul Kitchen and for Ace and Ziff’s World Ski & Snowboard Festival wrap party in 2004.

Fort Knox Five’s set for Jungle Love will take place at Garfinkel’s on Tuesday, Aug. 9. The following week, starting Aug. 15, Jungle Love moves to its new home on Mondays at the Savage Beagle.

New blood at the Beagle

The easy transfer of Jungle Love to the Beagle is a sign of the recent acquisition of the club by the Garfinkel’s ownership.

Garfinkel’s is run by Vancouver residents Derek Pink and Dave Kershaw who license and manage the business as third party operators in conjunction with club namesake and original owner Mitch Garfinkel, a U.S. lawyer and businessman.

Pink and Kershaw also operate Vancouver’s Au Bar.

Garfinkel’s manager Michael Hofbauer has come on board as a part owner of the Savage Beagle.

Hofbauer said the Beagle will receive a face-lift over the next months, with a goal to distinguish the upper lounge zone from the dance club in the basement.

Hofbauer said the club is aiming to relaunch the upper lounge in the fall and the club as a whole for the 2005/06-winter season.
