Ear to the village streets

New York-style hip-hop comes to Whistler this week in the form of Brooklyn-based DJ A.Vee, who takes over the turntables at Garfinkel’s on Monday night.

Best known as the official show DJ for hip-hop artist Masta Ace, and one half of production team The Courts, A.Vee made his name through DJ battle contests such as DMC in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

In addition to his profile as a "stage DJ," A.Vee is also known for his webcasts with the influential 88hiphop.com online hip-hop show, and can be heard regularly on Eminem’s SHADE45 satellite radio channel.

The multi-faceted artist even managed to bridge the gap between street culture and high culture as part of a DJ quartet that performed modern classical composer John Cage’s Imaginary Landscape for the Lincoln Center’s Summer Festival 2000.

A.Vee appears at Garfinkel’s for Frontline Entertainment’s Bounce Mondays hip-hop night. Presale tickets are currently available at the Electric Daisy Internet Café for only $3.

Battling it out in the Creek

The ongoing DJ battle series at Creekside Chinese eatery Joey Chan’s continues this Wednesday night.

The three-week series features eight DJ contestants competing for cash prizes based on half-hour sets, as determined by judges and crowd response.

Wednesday’s event features DJs Ben H, Skinny, Guggi and Angel Driver. The top two DJs will go on to the series finals the following Wednesday, Sept. 7.

The evening kicks off at 9 p.m. with the DJs going at it around 10 p.m.

Hardest working man in drum ’n’ bass coming back for more

A pillar of the international drum ’n’ bass community, DJ SS returns to Whistler for a set on Monday, Sept. 5.

The producer, event promoter and drum ’n’ bass innovator/ambassador, will be a welcome guest of the weekly Jungle Love all jungle/drum ’n’ bass club night, which has settled in nicely at its new Savage Beagle digs, says the night’s founder and resident DJ Jamie Tobin (a.k.a. Jungle Souldier).

SS has made numerous past visits to Whistler, mostly in conjunction with his World Of Drum N Bass DJ ensemble tours.

Upcoming events on the hip-hop horizon

Philly-based aggressive hip-hop crew Jedi-Mind-Tricks are set to blaze into town for a show at Garfinkel’s on Monday, Sept. 12. A limited number of advance tickets will be available for $8 at the Electric Daisy Internet Café, increasing to $12.

The following night, (Tuesday, Sept. 13) sees the return of L.A.-based MC Aceyalone, who will join DJ Seanski for The Bassment hip-hop night at Moe Joe’s.
