Club vibes

The Whistler club scene is going through its annual quiet down period, extra noticeable after a stellar winter.

The Whistler club scene is going through its annual quiet down period, extra noticeable after a stellar winter.

Jetsetting mixmasters such as Roger Sanchez, Krafty Kuts, Soul Of Man, DJ Rap, LTJ Bukem, Lorin Bassnectar, Aussie superstars Mark Dynamix and Kid Kenobi, Stanton Warriors, Malente, and so many more all paid Whistler a visit. And a talented Whistler/Vancouver crew kept energy levels high in the meantime.

A few events on the horizon are spiking the seasonal club lull before the summer outdoor party scene really gets into the swing of things.

Drum ’n’ bass heads missing the weekly Tuesday Foundation nights will want to swing by the Savage Beagle tonight (Thursday, May 19) to catch esteemed Canadian junglist Marcus Visionary.

Considered a founder of the North American jungle scene, the Toronto-based DJ/producer can boast a 15-year career, which includes a seven-year-running radio show called The Prophecy.

He formed namesake production house Visionary with partner Nemesis in 1996, the products of which receive play by premier DJs all over the world, earning him recognition as a leading name in DnB who is putting the Canadian scene on the international map.

Joining Visionary on the decks at the Beagle will be Whistler DJs Jungle Souldier and Plastic Surgeon and Vancouver’s B Traits, a fly young thing currently tearing up the tables with potent mixes of drum ’n’ bass, jungle, speed garage and hip-hop.

The May long weekend marks the special one-night return of Sunday Night Bounce at Garfinkel’s. The event will feature a local lineup with Phroh, Rosco and Rob Banks mixing up hip-hop, funk, dancehall, club bangers, drum ’n’ bass and breakbeats. The crew behind Sunday Night Bounce is also behind the new Jump-Off Fridays at the Savage Beagle, a distinctly "non-jiggy" night with VanCity and local hip-hop DJs in rotation.

Local has been the flavour of the month at Tommy Africa’s Sunday Soul Kitchen, which features house DJ Kori K this weekend followed by Mat the Alien and Mr. Fister (Chili Thom) the following weekends.

Upcoming events in the near future: Washington D.C.-based DJ duo the All Good Funk Alliance will join Mr. Fister at the G.L.C. on Saturday, June 11. And on Tuesday, June 14, DJ Seanski will be joined by MC Casual of the Oakland, California-based Hieroglypics crew for a special edition of The Bassment — Seanski’s current weekly residency at Moe Joe’s.

There’s guaranteed more to come so keep your ear to the Village Stroll.
