Cold no barrier for WMSC racers

While other events were cancelled because of the extreme cold, the Whistler Mountain Ski Club pushed on with their first race of the year on Saturday, the Teck Kinder GS. It was a worthwhile event, with Whistler skiers snapping up most of the hardware.

The event was open to K1 skiers (age 11-12), K2s (age 13-14), and J1s (15-16), which is rare at that level but allowed a few younger kids to upset older racers.

In the first GS run, K2 Matthew Segal of the WMSC was the top skier, followed by teammates John McIver, Davis Wong, Brodie Seger and Logan Pehota. In total WMSC skiers took seven of the top-10 spots.

In the first ladies run, K2 Kailee Darlington was first for Whistler, followed by Amanda Birtig of Mt. Washington, and the WMSC’s Charley Field. Kelly Steeves, a K1, was fourth overall and the only K1 to crack the top-10.

Matthew Segal picked up another medal in the second run, widening his gap on the competition. Brodie Seger was second, and Liam Montgomery of Cypress third. John McIver and Logan Pehota were fourth and fifth for the WMSC.

In the second women’s run, Amanda Birtig took the gold, followed by Charley Field and Kaylie Higgs of the WMSC. Kailee Darlington dropped to fifth, while K1 Kelly Steeves showed her grit again with another top-10 result, placing sixth overall.
