colo ski numbers down

Despite two months of above-average snowfall, Colorado ski resorts are still facing record declines in skier visits. According to numbers released by Colorado Ski Country USA last week, skier visits to the state through the end of February were down 9.3 per cent from the same period last winter. And the winter of 1998-99 saw a 5 per cent decline in skier visits from the previous winter. Until last winter, Colorado skier visits were rising annually despite the fact there was little change in the absolute number of skiers. Between the winter of 1994-95 and 1997-98 skier visits to Colorado rose from 11.1 million to 11.9 million. Poor early season snow conditions and fears about the Y2K bug are widely blamed for the declining numbers, however the Colorado Ski Country USA is also looking into whether other leisure activities are pulling people away from skiing.
