Colorado resorts using photo competition for marketing

Whistler photographers among shooters invited

Colorado Ski Country USA, the marketing co-operative for Colorado ski areas, has launched a marketing initiative that includes several Whistler photographers.

CSCUSA has invited 22 top ski and snowboard photographers to Colorado resorts to participate in its first annual Mountain Media Awards. Among the invitees are Whistler shooters Blake Jorgenson, Paul Morrison and Eric Berger.

The Mountain Media Awards program is a celebration of photography, winter sports, mountain culture and Colorado. The photographers are charged with creating a "mountain lifestyle" portfolio that paints a picture of each resort’s individual character and local flavour by photographing not only skiing and snowboarding at the resort, but also backcountry action, resort and town lifestyle, people, nightlife and alternative winter activities.

"This innovative program creates a competition for the best Colorado imagery that features Colorado resorts, Colorado’s mountain culture and lifestyle," said David Perry, President/CEO of Colorado Ski Country USA. "Colorado has so much to offer and the Mountain Media Awards is an ideal way to expose the top photographers in the world to our mountain playground."

It will also expose Colorado resorts to the public. The winning photography and photographers will be honoured at a special event at the Ski Industries America show in Las Vegas on Jan. 29. As well, Skiing Magazine will publish a 24-page feature highlighting the images in either their September or October 2002 issue.

In addition to the magazine feature, the winning photos will be taken on tour to consumer ski and snowboard shows, including the TransWorld Live College Tour in the winter of 2003.

Each of the 22 photographers invited to Colorado was matched with one of the 22 CSCUSA resorts and one ski or snowboard athlete. All were shooting between Jan. 4 and 9.

Berger was assigned to shoot Aspen Highlands, Jorgenson was at Crested Butte, and Morrison shot at Telluride.

The photographers were selected by CSCUSA and Skiing Magazine with input from CSCUSA’s resorts. Each photographer was assigned to a resort at random and will select a set number of images and submit to the judging panel. The judging panel will be comprised of industry insiders. The winning selections will be finalized by Jan. 18.
