The Community Foundation of Whistler (CFOW) is calling for applications from non-profit organizations in Whistler for community grants. Grants between $500 and $2,500 will be awarded to local groups with ideas for projects that build on existing strengths within the community. The grant application deadline is Feb. 14, 2002.
Launched in 2000, the Leadership, Engagement and Development Grants (LEAD) Program provides funding to non-profit groups whose innovative projects pool the talents and skills of residents to address local needs. By encouraging community members to work together, this program builds partnerships, promotes civic involvement and fosters community self-sufficiency.
The LEAD Grants Program is made possible by the Vancouver Foundation through a $4 million contribution that is divided among community foundations throughout B.C. based on the size of the populations they serve.
Last year, the Community Foundation of Whistler gave LEAD Grants to projects ranging from Whistler Museum and Archives Society and Whistler Fisheries Stewardship for Compilation of Historical Fisheries Data and Creation of Useable Fisheries Library; Whistler Naturalists for Naturalists Speaker Series and the Whistler Community Arts Council for the Children’s Arts Festival.
Nancy Wilhelm-Morden, president of the Community Foundation of Whistler, says that through this partnership with the Vancouver Foundation, the CFOW is able to financially assist local initiatives.
Founded in October, 1999, the Community Foundation of Whistler is a charitable organization that serves the community of Whistler. It currently manages six different funds donated by local residents, businesses and other charities and directs investment earnings to projects that help improve the quality of community life. It is one of 125 community foundations across Canada and is part of a growing international charitable movement. The movement’s underlying principle is that community members know best what their needs are, and that collectively they possess the capabilities necessary to meet them.
