Community grants announced

The Resort Municipality of Whistler announced $172,000 in community enrichment grants for 2008 at Monday’s council meeting, to be funded from general revenue.

The Resort Municipality of Whistler announced $172,000 in community enrichment grants for 2008 at Monday’s council meeting, to be funded from general revenue.

Due to budget constrains the municipality cut community grants by a third, from $264,000 in 2007 to $173,000 in 2008. Organizations applying for the grants were told to expect smaller grants this year, and adjust their requests accordingly.

The latest round of grants announced also doesn’t include other fee for service grants to the Whistler Museum and Archives, Whistler Animals Galore animal shelter, Whistler Arts Council and other non-governmental organizations.

The Whistler Off-Road Cycling Association, which received a $34,000 grant in 2007 to help with trail maintenance and youth development, received a $25,000 grant in 2008.

The Whistler Adaptive Sports Program also received $25,000 for its programming.

The Whistler Nordics will receive $11,000 for programming. The Association of Whistler Area Residents for the Environment will receive $10,000 to hire an executive director. Other groups receiving $10,000 include the Myrtle Philip Community School’s Parent Advisory Council, the Sea to Sky Community Services Society’s interim housing project, and the Zero Ceiling Society of Canada.

The Get Bear Smart Society received $7,500, Spring Creek Community School’s Parent Advisory Council received $2,500, Whistler For Youth received $5,000, Whistler Search and Rescue Society received $7,500, Whistler Secondary School’s scholarship fund received $2,000, the Whistler Writers Collective received $3,000, the Whistler-Blackcomb Freestyle Club received $4,000, Whistler Gymnastics Club received $2,000, Whistler Skating Club received $4,500, Whistler Youth Soccer Club received $7,000, Whistler Children’s Chorus received $4,000, Whistler Secondary’s Drama Club received $3,000, Peak Performance Dance Force Association received $4,000, and the Whistler Film Festival and Whistler Institute received $5,000.
