Community policing office to re-open in Squamish

Doors to open at end of November

The police presence in the downtown area of Squamish is about to increase. The community policing office (CPO), which closed its doors in November of 2010, is slated to re-open almost exactly two years later.

The office had to go through a significant renovation after the RCMP determined the office wasn't up to RCMP safety standards. The CPO opened in 2005 but it didn't have a glass barrier at the counter as required by the RCMP. The RCMP insisted door upgrades and networking upgrades had to be done in addition to the installation of the glass barrier.

According to the District of Squamish, the office is going to re-open at the end of next month.

Community Policing Coordinator Kathryn Hennigar spent a significant amount of time in the office before it closed and she will return to working in the CPO once it opens again.

"I look forward to having the Community Policing Office doors re-open to assist our residents, business operators and visitors through our many Crime Prevention programs and services," said Hennigar.

Scott McQuade, the president of the Squamish Downtown Business Improvement Area, said he is excited to have the office open again, adding that he believed there to have been a decrease in crime downtown when the office was in operation.

The District of Squamish also plans to include a bylaw enforcement and animal control presence at the CPO.
