Community partners are starting to put their heads together to address the never-before-seen numbers using the local food bank.
May was the Whistler Food Bank's busiest month on record with 434 visits to the trailer at the bottom of Lorimer Road.
Food Bank Co-ordinator Sara Jennings said that they have almost served as many people this year as they did for all of 2010. It's an alarming trend that has been growing these past three years.
Last week Whistler Community Services Society, which runs the Food Bank, called a meeting bringing together Whistler Blackcomb, the Whistler Centre for Sustainability, Training Innovations, and Mayor Ken Melamed.
"The first thing is to draw attention to the issues amongst those key partners," said Jennings. "They're seen as a very important piece of the puzzle in trying to figure out what's going on and why these things are going on... The next question is: what do we do about it and that's something that we're working to try to figure out."
The Whistler Chamber of Commerce is also a key part of the puzzle. A representative was unable to attend the meeting last week but will be involved in future discussions.
