Crankworx Whistler has named the competitors for its two popular non-biking competitions — The Dirt Diaries and Deep Summer Photo Challenge.

The 2016 winner of Dirt Diaries, Dylan Forbes, returns as part of a pack of six videographers and athletes.

Each competitor began filming a four- to six-minute video with their teams and athletes on June 1, with the edited final version being screened at Whistler Olympic Plaza on Tuesday, Aug. 15 at 8:30 p.m.

A winner will be selected by judges, with thousands of dollars in prize money up for grabs.

The other five competitors are K.C. Deane, Micayla Gatto, and Whistler's Ian Morrison, Steve Storey and Zander Geddes.

Five pro photographers and one wildcard have been announced for the Deep Summer photo competition, which take place on Wednesday, Aug. 16 at 8 p.m. at Whistler Olympic Plaza.

The photographers and team snap athletes at work and play in the Whistler Mountain Bike Park and on trails around the resort and region over 72 hours, with a slideshow being created using some of the thousands of shots taken and put to music.

This year's Deep Summer photographers are: Ollie Jones of Whistler, Swede Daniel Ronnback, Revelstoke's Steve Shannon, Julien Grimard of Montreal and Frenchman JB Liautard. The wildcard, Satchel Cronk, hails from California.

Organizer Jill Young says the mountain culture of riding has grown in part thanks to the filmmaking and photography capturing it.

"We see so much now on social media, and events like Deep Winter and Dirt Diaries are good opportunities for people to put time and effort into their work. They then show us new ways to look at the sport that we might not have seen," she says.

Tickets for both competitions can be purchased at www.whistlerblackcomb.com.

Prior Topsheet competition opens

Artists from the Sea to Sky region and Vancouver Island are invited to submit their ideas for the annual Prior Topsheet Competition.

Those selected will see their artwork grace the 2018-19 lineup of Prior products, including skis, split skis and snowboards.

Those chosen will win two pairs of skis or snowboards with their design as the topsheet.

The deadline is Sept. 1, with online voting for the 10 to 15 finalists running from Sept. 16 to Oct. 1. Two winners will be chosen by the voting public.

Beer Fest needs artists

The Whistler Village Beer Festival wants to add an artistic spin this year with a large backdrop designed by a local artist.

The winning design entry will be blown up to 12 feet x 8 feet (3.7 metres x 2.4 metres) and become the onstage backdrop during the festival.

High-quality digital image entries can be submitted to [email protected] by July 31 at 5 p.m.
