Concerts pay tribute to Young Artists past

Twenty young musicians from the University of British Columbia’s summer music camps will perform two chamber music concerts in Whistler on Thursday, July 22 as a tribute to the original Young Artists Experience program.

What: Young Artists Experience Tribute Concerts

Where: Whistler Village/MY (Millennium) Place

When: Thursday, July 22 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.

An initiative of the former Whistler Centre for Business and the Arts, the Young Artists Experience was launched in the summer of 1992 under the artistic direction of UBC pianists Jane Coop and Rena Sharon. The program accommodated 20 promising young musicians from across Canada, who gathered in Whistler for two weeks of master classes, festival concert performances and unique camaraderie.

The program continued every summer through the year 2000, ceasing when its sponsoring organization shut down operations.

After a four year hiatus the Young Artists Experience has been reincarnated at the University of British Columbia, which has started hosting two-week summer camps in chamber music for advanced pianists and string players between the ages of 15 and 22 years.

Thursday’s pair of concerts in Whistler has been incorporated into the camp’s performance schedule, which also includes several Vancouver appearances.

The UBC group will perform a free concert at 1 p.m. in front of the 2010 Information Centre on the Village Stroll and a 5 p.m. concert at MY Place, with admission by donation. Both events feature a chamber music program.

The event is being billed as a tribute to the original Young Artists Experience.
