Contractors to improve management of highway delays

The project to widen, regrade and repave the highway from Function Junction to Whistler Village was hit with several longer than forecasted delays this week, including a delay on Tuesday morning that lasted roughly half an hour and backed vehicles up for several kilometres.

According to Karen Stone, the senior traffic consultant working with Alpine Paving, that delay was the result of some grinding work that closed the northbound lane. They instituted alternating traffic, but volumes were much higher than expected and resulted in delays that were far longer than the five to 15 minutes advertised.

Stone says a traffic control supervisor was brought to the site, and they immediately opened up both lanes to relieve congestion. In the future, a traffic control supervisor will be assigned to the site to monitor the traffic flow and prevent back-ups.

This week drivers were told to expect delays of five minutes from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and delays of 15 minutes from Monday to Thursday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and on Friday from 9 a.m. until noon.

As well there will be single alternating traffic and delays of up to 30 minutes between Nordic Drive and Hillcrest drive for asphalt reclamation, taking place from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. on Thursday and Friday, Aug. 20-21.
