Cook, Baker claim Phat Wednesday races

The Phat Wednesday Freeride Series continued on July 14 with a Kokanee Downhill Series for adults and the Junior Race Series for younger riders.

The event took place on a section of the Whistler Downhill Course in the Whistler Mountain Bike Park in preparation for the B.C. Downhill Championships on Sunday.

Adam Cook won his third race in a row in the pro category with a time of two minutes, 19.9 seconds. Tyler Morland was second in 2:23.1, and David Howse third in 2:24.2.

In the pro women’s race, Brook Baker took the loonies with a time of 3:01.9. Angela Teng, who is on top of the standings, was second in 3:05.4 and Jenn Ashton was third in 3:07.2.

Only two junior men took part, with James McSkimming winning once again with a time of 2:49.9, which would have put him in the top-20 among the pro men. Mark Holmes was second in 6:06.0.

There are three more Phat Wednesdays on the calendar this season – July 28, Aug. 11 and Aug. 25.

The Phat Wednesday races are open to all WORCA members and work like Loonie races – riders pay $2 to enter and the money is divided among the top racers. Participants are also given free refreshments by sponsors at Whistler-Blackcomb.
