Cops for Cancer on a mission

The Cops for Cancer Tour for a Friend will return to Whistler next weekend, as the 17-member groups cycles from Pemberton to Squamish to raise funds for cancer research.

This year Constable Devon Jones of the Pemberton-Whistler RCMP detachment and Constable Kim Janakka of the Squamish RCMP are taking part.

The tour will arrive in Whistler at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The ride will officially begin on Sunday at 9 a.m. in Pemberton, will make a stop at the Whistler RCMP detachment at 11 a.m., and continue on to Squamish for a tour stop at the RCMP detachment there. There will be a community dinner at Totem Hall at 6:30 p.m. The tour will leave Squamish the following morning at 7:45 a.m. before heading off on a tour of 15 communities on the Sunshine Coast and in the Lower Mainland, finishing up at Vancouver City Hall on Saturday, Sept. 25. The group will cover approximately 600 km over seven days.

The Cops for Cancer Tour for a Friend is a fundraising partnership between the Canadian Cancer Society and policing agencies. Each cyclist will be paired with a child who has experienced cancer, and will carry the child’s picture during the tour as honorary members of the team.

The money will go towards childhood cancer research and the Canadian Cancer Society Camp Goodtimes, a free summer camp for children with a history of cancer.

The Cops for Cancer partnership with the Canadian Cancer Society has raised more than $2.7 million in the B.C. and Yukon since 1994.

Cyclists participating in the tour have been organizing fundraising events in their own communities as part of the tour, will raise money in each community they visit.
