Focus on healthy eating This year’s food and wine extravaganza, Cornucopia, is very aptly raising money to benefit the Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C. & Yukon. The festival takes place on the weekend of Nov. 13 to 15 and has taken the phrase HeartSmart as its theme. The reception and gala celebration Crush! gets things cooking on Friday the 13th with a grand tasting of 50 top Pacific Coast wineries, a silent auction and a HeartSmart Culinary Grand Prix Celebrity Chef Competition. Chef’s from B.C.’s high ranking restaurants will be on hand to create healthy gourmet meals that could never fall prey to the pitfalls of boring and bland. Vancouver chef James Kennedy will be co-ordinating the competition and is well known for his healthy options cooking. He has focused on cooking with low-sodium and lower-fat recipes for the last 15 years. "HeartSmart is all about making healthy lifestyle choices," says Kennedy. Although people may feel overwhelmed at the thought of making their daily diet healthy, it’s actually very easy." A B.C. Heart and Stroke Foundation release explains that heart disease and strokes remain Canada’s leading cause of death and disability. Research shows that lifestyle changes, like eating a HeartSmart diet and being physically active, can reduce the death rate from cardiovascular disease by 50 per cent. Tickets for the Crush! reception and gala celebration are $50 per person and are available by phoning TicketMaster at (604) 280-4444, the Whistler Conference Centre (932-2394) or the Heart and Stroke Foundation at (604) 736- 4404.
