Avalanche traps skier in Corona bowl A backcountry skier was buried up to her chest following an avalanche in the Corona Bowl area, outside the Blackcomb ski area boundary, on March 14. The skier required the assistance of ski patrollers to dig her out. Although she was equipped with a shovel, transceiver and a probe, the fact that she was alone made self-rescue impossible. According to Brad Sills, manager of the Whistler Search and Rescue team, five avalanches occurred in the area over a half hour period March 14. According to the Canadian Avalanche Advisory’s Whistler line at 938-7676, the avalanche risk is "considerable", with the possibility of both natural and man-made avalanches. Before heading into the backcountry skiers and boarders should have the tools for self-rescue and to check the snow conditions. Never enter the backcountry alone.
