Golden Dreams plan approved
Whistler council has supported the River of Golden Dreams Watershed Management Plan, with implementation subject to funding.
The watershed management plan for the central Whistler Valley area is intended to help protect and restore the ecological health of the area, while maintaining the long-term social and economic viability of the community. The watershed management plan lays out goals, objectives and recommended actions for maintaining and improving the watershed’s health.
The River of Golden Dreams Watershed Management Plan encompasses 48 square kilometres, from Green Lake in the north to the Brio subdivision in the south. It also includes the upper reaches of the 21 Mile Creek watershed to the west.
The watershed management plan was developed over the past year and a half by stakeholders. Christina Symko, a graduate student from SFU when the project started, co-ordinated the management plan.
The municipality has applied for a piece of Crown land at the corner of Highway 99 and Cheakamus Lake Road (the stoplight at Function Junction), for a visitor centre.
The Whistler Chamber of Commerce is interested in operating a visitor information centre on the highway during the summer season, to service visitors arriving by automobile.
