Crab Shack feelin’ the love

Tag dating game finds a new home

What: The Love Shack

Where: Crab Shack

When: Thursday, Aug. 19

Hooking up is not all that hard in Whistler. Even those suffering through the driest of spells have to admit it’s easier here than in other locales, what with all the tipsy cougars, stagettes and other Whistler-specific phenomena.

It’s likely a good part of the reason a dating game known as Shag ’n’ Tag, took off last winter. Take away the pressure and things get fun.

There were two Shag ’n’ Tag nights at the now closed Maxx Fish. With the Fish’s ex-manager Andre Duguay now at the Crab Shack the game is being resuscitated as a regular Thursday night event in the lounge.

The rules (or lack thereof) are as follows: each participant is tagged with a number and gets a corresponding space on a message board. Fellow number wearers can then write to each other under the guise of semi-anonymity and what happens after that is anyone’s guess.

The night also includes a good-natured take on the classic dating game with willing participants drawn from the Shag ’n’ Taggers. It’s a laid back affair with a winners’ circle that includes bespectacled misfit punk rock cyborg Chris Mansbridge.

Local music promoter Lindsay Shedden will continue as host.

"It’s definitely a no-pressure event. There’s no obligation to write to people," Shedden affirmed with her trademark enthusiasm.

In addition to the game, the night features an intriguing activity billed as "pornstar karaoke" and live music by Duran Duran Duran a.k.a. Chris, Josh and Benson from Slow Nerve Action covering quirk-rock classics by Ween, Frank Zappa and Tenacious D.

The game kicks off at approximately 10 p.m. There is no cover charge for the event.
