Creekside laundromat to open early March

Locals looking for a place to do their laundry, following the closure of the Nesters laundromat in late December, will soon have another option.

Les Ecker and Dave Keen, co-owners of the South Side Diner, are preparing to open a facility under their restaurant by the second week of March.

According to Ecker, the facility will have eight washers and eight dryers, and will also offer free wireless Internet. It will also be connected to the diner for people looking for a snack between loads, and will be open a full 16 hours a day — from 8 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week.

“We’re looking to complete our plumbing inspection this week and tidy things up a little, and (we) should be able to open in the next couple of weeks,” said Ecker on Monday.

“It’s not a big space, but they’re all new, high-efficiency machines that work a little faster. We’re also offering a drop-off service at night as well to keep the place busy as much as possible.”

The laundry idea has been on the backburner since the restaurant opened two years ago, according to Ecker, near the time the laundromat closed in Creekside. Ecker and Keen have been too busy with the restaurant to put much work into the idea since then, but the concept was quickly revived when they heard about the facility at Nesters closing.

With long hours and a connection to the diner, Ecker says they hope to be able to serve most of the community that was left without many options when the Nesters laundromat space was sold. The laundry at the Riverside RV Resort and Campground was able to pick up some of the slack in the meantime, but the owners were concerned that they would have to close their small laundry to the public during their busy summer months.

The new laundry is located in the Southside Lodge, opposite the Husky service station. The exact opening date should be announced in the next week.
