Cross-country season off to early start

Lost Lake trails may open this weekend

The Nordic ski season got off to an early start in recent weeks with the opening of select Callaghan Country trails on Nov. 14 and the Whistler Olympic Park following the next weekend with close to 21 km of trails.

Roughly 30 km of legacy trails in the park will open to the public this season, as well as roughly 40 km of Callaghan Country trails.

The Olympic stadium areas and trails are off-limits this season as crews build stadiums and assemble the overlay for the Olympics and Paralympics, but may reopen in the spring after the Paralympics if the snow pack lasts.

If the weather co-operates, Lost Lake could follow as early as this weekend. The Lost Lake Loop was groomed on Tuesday as were the Panorama and Old Mill trails. Providing the conditions hold up through the rain expected in the forecast, most of the trails will open this weekend.

Early bird passes for the three local ski areas are available until Dec. 5, as well as the Tri-Area Pass for access to all areas. Tri-Area passes are still $299 for adults, $179 for youth, $150 for children and $598 for families.

The passes are available at the front desk of Meadow Park Sports Centre and at Callaghan Country and Whistler Olympic Park.

Also available during the early bird sale are books of tickets, night only passes at Lost Lake and season passes that are good for one of the three areas.
