Most of the trail network still open, despite warm weather
Three weeks without snow and temperatures in the double digits took their toll on the Lost Lake Park cross-country trail system, but thanks to the efforts of municipal crews more than 80 per cent of the 32 kilometres of trails are still open and "in excellent shape," says Ian Goldstone of the Lost Lake Cross Country Connection.
"We’re working very hard to keep them open, bringing in snow from the hockey arena and everybody’s doing a lot of shoveling. Some of the higher, more difficult trails like Upper Panorama, the Black Loop and Centennial are closed, but what is open is surprisingly good. It’s been warm in the daytime, but it’s been cooling down in the evenings and we’ve managed to keep what we’ve got," he says.
The trails system is typically open until the end of March, and a few snowfalls would ensure that this year would be no different. Snow was expected in the village this week, as the valley starts to cool off and a series of coastal storms work their way inland.
"We would really like to see some new snow out of this system, but right now our priority is letting people know that we’re still open and that the conditions are great," Goldstone says.
