Pemberton country-rock band Dakota Pearl's first EP, Big Mountain Music, has been released and lead singer Adam Leggett couldn't be happier.

"It was so much fun to do. It was a long process. We wrote a bunch of songs and brought in producer Paul Shatto.... We started working with him to really dial them in and tighten them up," Leggett says.

"We hit the studio running and everything fell together effortlessly. This is the easiest record out of 25 or 26 I've recorded, because of all the planning and the vibe of the music."

The six-track EP was launched on Thursday, March 2.

The sound the band aimed for was a cross between country and rock, something Dakota Pearl came to call Big Country (hence the name of the album). The band has been together for a little over three years.

"Our music is on the verge of country, but it's got this massive, raw style. We sound like ourselves now, which is awesome. We have our own sound, our own style," Leggett says.

"They're just upbeat, feel-good songs about love, relationships and life. Having a good time. Simple stuff. People can relate to them."

A launch party for the EP is planned for the future.

Big Mountain Music can be heard on Dakota Pearl's website (www.dakotapearl.com), on iTunes and on Spotify.

Park proposal outlined by new film

The Valhalla Wilderness Society is showing its new film, Primeval: Enter the Incomappleux, at the Brackendale Art Gallery on March 8 at 7 p.m.

The film explores the society's proposed Selkirk Mountain Caribou Park, which has an ancient, intact temperate rainforest with 1,800-year-old trees and is home to mountain caribou, grizzly and wolverines, as well as creating a wildlife connectivity between three parks in the region.

The film was made by award-winning director Damien Gillis (Fractured Land).
