A resident of Alaska has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, after causing a head-on collision along Highway 99 on Thursday afternoon.

James Kroener, 18, was driving through Whistler on his way to Oregan, and passed a number of vehicles on a two lane section in the Power Line Hill area, just south of Whistler.

Kroener’s vehicle struck a northbound SUV driven by a resident of Squamish, causing the closure of the highway for about 80 minutes while emergency services attended the scene. The lone occupant of the northbound vehicle also suffered a broken kneecap and underwent emergency surgery.

Kroener was released on a recognizance with cash bail and is scheduled appear in North Vancouver Provincial Court on Jan. 23.

Police are asking any witnesses to the collision to contact the Whistler detachment at 604-932-3044.
