Date set for Squamish Triathlon

July 14 th was the day chosen to run the fifth annual Squamish Triathlon – A Memorial to Bob McIntosh. Once again the race will be part of the New Balance TriBC race Series, number eight in a series of 10 competitions.

This year the title sponsors will be Doug Fox/BDO Dunwoody and Race & Company. Other sponsors include Marketplace IGA, Interfor, Sea to Sky Ocean Sports, and Carney’s Waste Systems, and Coast Aggregate. The Georgia Straight has signed on as the media sponsor.

More than 400 competitors competed in last year’s Squamish Triathlon, up from 300 the year before. It might have been more if the event didn’t have to compete with the World Championships in Edmonton on the same weekend.

Similar number are expected for this year, race.

The course is the same as last year: a 1,500 metre swim in Alice Lake, a 40 km ride up the Squamish Valley Road and back to Don Ross Secondary, and a 10 km run in Brackendale around the Cheekeye Fan Trail.

Proceeds from the Triathon go towards the Robert W. McIntosh Memorial Scholarship and the Squamish Titans Sports Club.

The scholarship is awarded annually to a Howe Sound Secondary student who is active in athletic, academics and citizenship. The Titans are a local sports club that promotes participation in recreation activities and supports community recreation facilities, such as the Cheekeye Fan Trail.

Information about volunteering and registration is available on the race Web site at www.squamishtriathlom.org.
