Dates set for Whistler-Blackcomb events

This year, with the Vancouver Whistler 2010 Bid Corporation vying for IOC approval, the eyes of the world will be on us a little more than usual.

This year’s Whistler Winterstart, running from Dec. 6 to 10, will once again feature the Nokia Snowboard FIS World Cup halfpipe and snowboardcross events. This year an FIS Continental Cup giant slalom race will also be held on Dec. 10 for alpine boarders, including members of the national team.

Other one of a kind events include the World Cup Freestyle weekend on Blackcomb from Jan. 25 to 27, featuring aerials and moguls.

Another premier event is the Pontiac GMC Canadian Alpine National Championships from March 11 to 20, pitting our top ski racers against one another in slalom, giant slalom, super G, downhill and combined events.

The Telus Mobility Whistler Blackcomb Foundation Winter Classic race will be held on the same weekend as the Freestyle World Cup.

The annual Peak to Valley Race, where competitors race GS style from the top of The Saddle on Whistler Mountain to the base of Creekside, will be held on Feb. 1 and 2.

Garf’s Bandai Double Cross will run from April 2 to 4 on Blackcomb.

The Sierra Wireless Air Canada Whistler Cup will be held from April 5 to 7, featuring some of the top juvenile ski racers in the world.

The Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival will be held from April 12 to 21, featuring events for new school skiers and boarders. The sponsors and format have yet to be announced.

The Savage Beagle Race on Whistler is scheduled for April 24, followed closely by the Mouton Cadet Spring Festival on April 27 and 28. The Mouton Cadet pits members of the hospitality industry and media against each other.

Kokanee Valley Race Series

The Kokanee Valley Race Series is a recreational racing tradition in Whistler that attract all ages and levels of ability, from former World Cup racers to people new to the sport.

Register at Guest Relations or by calling 1-800-766-0449. Registration on competition days is available at the Rendezvous on Blackcomb and the Raven’s Nest on Whistler.

The cost is $20 for each individual race or $150 for all 10 races.

Sprite Snowboard Series

The Sprite Snowboard Series features halfpipe, slopestyle and snowboard cross competitions with divisions for all ages and abilities. Skiers are also welcome at many of the events.

A number of athletes competing in this series for the past few years have gone on to the national and national development teams. Riders who participate in the snowboard series can get their points tracked for B.C. Snowboard Association events have to join the BCSA.

The cost is $20 per event, and winners are eligible for prizes.

Adult Weekend Race Series

These weekend fun giant slalom races are for weekend visitors and locals who love to race. The race division is for diehard racers, and race suits are allowed. The sport division is for inexperienced racers, and suits aren’t allowed. Age categories will apply in both divisions. The cost is $20 per event.

Feb. 17 – Practice Runs for the Sport Division on Ross’ Gold

Mar. 3 – GateBusters training on March 2 free for registered racers on Ross’ Gold.

Atomic Skier and Snowboarder Cross

A popular snow cross event that attracts some of the best skiers and riders in the valley. The cost is $25 for amateurs and $30 for pros, which includes a minimum of two runs, video coverage and the awards presentation. Events are scheduled for Feb. 21, March 7 and March 21.

Atomic will also host a Slopestyle and Halfpipe event for skiers and boarders on March 23 and 24.
