Dave Wiebe wins bookmark contest

In celebration of Youth Week (May 4-10, 2002), 15 young artists from across the Lower Mainland and Howe Sound will be recognized and awarded prizes for their winning entries in the Celebrate: Design-A-Bookmark Contest presented by Public Library InterLINK.

We are proud to announce that Whistler’s very own Dave Wiebe, age 15, came first in the contest for the North & West/Vancouver/Bowen Island/Whistler/ Squamish/ Pemberton/Sunshine Coast Region. His bookmark is available at the library as well as those of the other first place winners.

In February, the Public Library InterLINK family of libraries launched the exciting contest for youth aged 13-18 years old. Young people were invited to apply their artistic vision and design a bookmark that celebrates books, reading, libraries and youth. More than1,000 entries were submitted.

The winners of the bookmark contest are:

• Vancouver Region: 1 st Place—Sally Lee, age 16; 2 nd Place—Jayme Pearce, age 17; 3 rd Place—Stephan Tan, age 16

• Fraser Valley Region: 1 st Place—Kelly Aarons, age 16; 2 nd Place—Ellen Lee, age 18; 3 rd Place—Grant Davis, age 18

• Richmond/Surrey Region: 1 st Place—Claudia Ho, age 13; 2 nd Place—Colleen Keith, age 15; 3 rd Place—Elisabeth Jackson, age 13

• Burnaby/Coquitlam/New Westminster/Port Moody Region: 1 st Place—Ellen Ryu, age 14; 2 nd Place—Bernard Anderson, age 13; 3 rd Place—Kaynath Hussain, age 14

• North & West Vancouver/Bowen Island/Whistler/Squamish/Pemberton/Sunshine Coast Region: 1 st Place—Dave Wiebe, age 15, 2 nd Place—Justin Kuang-Hsin Chen, age 16; 3 rd Place—Ella Sharp Morton, age 15

Each of the five first place winners will receive a cheque for $100. Second and third place winners will receive gift certificates for books valued at $50 and $25 respectively. 12,000 copies of each of the first place winning bookmark designs will be distributed through InterLINK libraries starting May 4 th to kick off Youth Week.

Public Library InterLINK is the co-operative federation of 17 public libraries encompassing over 70 library sites from the Fraser Valley to the Sunshine Coast and serving over 2.3 million residents. This partnership fosters and promotes the provision of quality library services to residents through open access to member libraries and the development and implementation of collaborative cost effective service efficiencies and enhancements.
