Eminent environmentalist, author to present campaign for sustainability
The 2004 Sustainability Speakers Series, presented by Whistler. It’s Our Nature and the Early Adopters of The Natural Step, has booked Dr. David Suzuki to appear in Whistler on Monday, April 26 at the Telus Conference Centre.
The announcement was made last week at the conclusion of a presentation by Dr. Wade Davis, who gave a talk on the world’s disappearing cultures before a packed house of more than 500.
Dr. Suzuki is best known for his work on the award-winning CBC television series The Nature of Things, which is broadcast in more than 80 countries. His television credits also include A Planet for the Taking, which won an award from the United Nations, an eight-part PBS series called The Secret of Life, and a five-part Discovery Channel special titled The Brain.
He was the creator of the CBC radio series Quirks and Quarks, and created two documentary series on the environment, From Naked Ape to Superspecies and It’s a Matter of Survival.
Dr. Suzuki is also the author of more than 30 books, and publishes a weekly syndicated column called Science Matters.
More importantly, Dr. Suzuki is the chairman of the Vancouver-based David Suzuki Foundation. Founded in 1990 to inform and influence the public, politicians and corporations, the Suzuki Foundation provides practical advice and solutions to the day’s pressing environmental issues.
Current David Suzuki Foundation campaigns include climate change, forests and wild lands, oceans and sustainable living.
Recent activities on the sustainable front include the Nature Challenge, ten simple things people can do to protect nature, and a program to become environmentally sustainable in a generation.
The Whistler. It’s Our Nature Sustainability Speaker Series started in October of 2001 with a series of five guests. The program was halted as the community went through the Whistler. It’s Our Future community planning phase.
The speaker series got back on track in January with a presentation by economic and social sustainability expert Coro Strandberg, who gave a presentation on achieving sustainability by exercising our power as consumers.
Strandberg was followed by 101 Solutions to Global Climate Change author Guy Dauncey in February, and author and filmmaker Dr. Wade Davis on March 18.
