Hip hop superstars De La Soul are coming to Whistler.

The rapper trio — Pos, Dave and Maseo — have performed together since 1987 and are considered founders of hip hop music.

The World Ski and Snowboard Festival (WSSF) is bringing De La Soul to Whistler for a free show on the main stage in Skier’s Plaza at the base of Whistler Mountain on Saturday, April 12.

“The line-up for the 2014 Outdoor Concert Series has been coming together over the past couple of weeks and is looking awesome,” says Sue Eckersley, event director of the World Ski and Snowboard Festival, in a press release.

“We are really happy with the great variety of bands we have been able to secure, and now with hip hop icons De La Soul confirmed to kick off the opening weekend, we’re in great shape.”

Hailing from Long Island, New York, De La Soul’s debut album debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising came out in 1989.

De La Soul’s performance on the kick-off Saturday for the World Ski and Snowboard Festival will be followed by the Monster Energy Shred Show Big Air, at the base of Whistler Mountain, next to the Main Stage. The Big Air is a World Snowboard Tour 5-star event and will feature athletes hitting a huge 70-foot table jump in an attempt to take home a portion of the $25,000 prize purse.

Additional acts also confirmed to play free shows at the WSSF Outdoor Concert Series this year include: The Original Wailers, Shapeshifter, Cut Chemist, The Planet Smashers, Fort Knox Five, Bombino, Pigeon Park, The Post War, The Hairfarmers, Jenny Lea, Freeflow, and The Sociables.

The free daily concerts in Skier’s Plaza run between 2:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
