Declining hotel rates tracked by discount travel site

Hotwire.com ®, a leading discount travel site, has released the first ever Hotel Rate Report.

It will be published monthly and shows the top 10 cities in Canada with the largest reductions in hotel prices in Canada.

In the first edition Whistler had the fourth greatest drop in rates with prices down 18 per cent on a 3.5 star hotel. The average room rate was $103 a night.

The Canadian Hotwire Hotel Rate Report gives consumers up-to-date information on the Canadian cities with the best hotel deals of the month.

The report is generated through a comparison of pricing trends from the previous year in the top markets, and factors in month-by-month price fluctuations. The report then highlights the cities that have the biggest hotel price drops each month.

Many popular destinations are seeing prices decline this summer. Quebec City and Victoria top the August Canadian Hotel Rate Report with 21 per cent drops. The other cities rounding out the top five are also located in the western region of Canada, including Vancouver, Whistler and Banff (per cent drops of 20, 18 and 17, respectively). August has seen many resort destinations, particularly those in B.C., drop significantly in price compared to the same time last year.
