From Nov. 23 to 26, the Whistler Racquet Club is hosting the 2006 Brimginham National Wheelchair Tennis Championship, bringing the top disabled players from across the country together to compete for more than $15,000 in prize money.

The men’s open division will start the tournament on Thursday, Nov. 23, and other divisions will get underway on Friday at 9 a.m. Each division will include singles, doubles and consolation rounds, with the finals in singles and doubles taking place on Sunday.

Wheelchair tennis is an Olympic sport, and the tournament will feature athletes in contention to represent Canada at the 2008 Games in Beijing.

Whistler was chosen to host the tournament because of the Whistler Racquet Club’s facilities and because of the accessibility of town amenities.

It’s also being viewed as a dry run for hosting the Paralympics, helping an accessibility committee to identify any issues for people with disabilities.
