This year the Cheakamus Challenge is not just about racing bikes, but donating bikes as well. Teaming up with Bicycles for Humanity, the goal is to collect used bikes and donate them to First Nations communities in Squamish and Mt. Currie.
Bikes and bike gear can be donated after Sept. 15 at Pique Newsmagazine, and at both the start of the race at Squamish Airport and finish of the race at Dusty’s on Sept. 20. Call Pique at 604-938-0202 to arrange drop-offs.
Terry Fox run set for Aug. 14.
The international Terry Fox Run has raised more than $400 million for cancer research in the past 28 years, with hundreds of thousands of participants taking part in Canada and around the world.
This year’s event is Sunday, Sept. 14, and there will be runs in Squamish and Whistler. Pemberton’s event is a week earlier, taking place Sept. 7.
Whistler’s event will be based out of Meadow Park, and will get underway at 10 a.m. with 5 km and 10 km distances. This one is open to walkers, cyclists and runners.

Public welcome for figure skate exhibition
On Thursday evening, Aug. 28, the Whistler Skating Club is inviting members of the public to come out and watch an exhibition by Canadian bronze medal ice dance champions Michael Coreno and Allie Hann-McCurdy, both contenders to represent Canada in the 2010 Winter Games. The pair is coached by Victor Kraatz and wife Maikko Uotila Kraatz, guest coaches for the skating club’s end of year summer camp.
The exhibition will be open at 5:30 p.m.
Rain pre-empts Bearclaw Invitational
One of the last slopestyle events of the season is the Bearclaw Invitational, hosted by BMX and mountain bike star Darren Berrcloth at Mt. Washington Alpine Resort on Vancouver Island.
Organizers managed to get the first two runs off in the qualifier on Friday, but cancelled the finals on Saturday because of the fog and heavy rain. The finals would have been moved to Sunday, but the forecast didn’t improve enough and the qualifier runs were made official.
Jamie Goldman of the U.S. placed first, followed by Darren Berrecloth and Graham Agassiz. Cameron Zink was third, while Whistler’s Brandon Semenuk was fifth.
Dirt Series wraps up
There are still a few spots available for final Dirt Series camp of the season on Sept. 13-14. This is a co-ed camp, and will feature Rocky Mountain team riders Wade Simmons and Kyle McDonald as guest coaches.
Participants can choose cross-country, freeride and downhill skills sessions each morning, and the group will either go up the mountain or head out to trails in the valley in the afternoon. Saturday night will also feature a bike maintenance session, an opportunity to be fitted to your bike, and a group dinner. The camp also includes lunch, bike park passes, and a chance to win prizes.
