Doormen will get training

Club doormen will get security training next month from the RCMP to help control rowdies coming up from Vancouver to the village on weekends.

"With Whistler being a seasonal work force, we all agreed more regular training sessions with everyone on a uniform standard in terms of security and safety training would be beneficial to the community," said Councillor Marianne Wade.

Her comments came after a two-and-a-half hour meeting Wednesday between police, club owners and managers, the taxi service, bus personnel and representatives of the hotel and accommodation sector.

The resort was stunned when a youth was arrested with a gun last month and stakeholders are vowing to take whatever steps are necessary to keep the resort safe.

Also suggested at the meeting was a designated police force at the taxi loop, more taxi stands around the village, the development of better methods to screen people making bookings, and more regular meetings between the stakeholders.

Said Wade: "It was agreed that the issue of patron safety was a community one.

"It's not just the club's responsibility. Everyone plays a part in bringing these tourists here, from the lodging managers to the restaurants which feed them before hitting the bars and so forth.

"We're all in this together and are confident joining forces will alleviate a lot of the problems."
