Celebrating the Crankworx Mountain Bike Festival this Thursday, July 27 at Lost Lake, LUNAFliks hosts not one, but two under-the-stars screenings with The Collective’s lastest flick Roam and the psychological thriller The Jacket starring Academy-Award-winner Adrien Brody ( The Pianist ).
Anything but just another mountain bike film, The Collective’s cinematographers showcase both the rush and soul of mountain biking, ramping up everything from singletrack to downhilling and freeriding.
Whistler was first privy to the film at its Canadian premier at the Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival in April.
It was beautiful. Even the few of us who would rather throw ourselves off a cliff before sporting pedals couldn’t help being lured into the rhythm, air and flow of the sport. Cable cams flew audiences like a bird over time-stands-still flips while vehicle shots shared riders’ speed with us armchair couch cruisers.
In Roam , mountain biking is not just a sport but a journey unto itself. Audiences laughed along as North African children chased after riders through rural landscapes then sat back in awe of the 1,000 year old architecture legendary rider Ryan Leech navigates in Prague.
In addition to the Czech Republic, the film follows riders all over the globe, including Moab, Utah, Marrakech, Morocco and of course Whistler’s own backyard.

Leech keeps company with the likes of Darren Berrecloth, Geoff Gulevich, Wade Simmons, Jordie Lunn, Tyler Morland, Nathan Rennie, Steve Romaniuk, Adam Billinghurst, Kenny Smith, Steve Peat, Andrew Shandro, Ryder Kasprick, Jordie Lunn, Cam McCaul, Matt Hunter and Thomas Vanderham.
The Collective, headed by Jamie Houssian and Darcy Wittenburg, carry on their award-winning cinematography from their first self-titled film, capturing leading industry riders on both film and digital.
The second film of the night will be The Jacket , a mind-and-genre bending psychological thriller produced by Peter Guber, George Clooney and Steven Soderbergh. Brody plays Jack Starks, a time traveler running against time. He knows little about who he is, nor does he understand why he’s bound in a straightjacket and subjected to bizarre psychiatric treatments. However, the bizarre turns into the awesome when the treatments send him into the future, only days away from his impending murder.
LUNAFliks hosts a film series every Thursday night in July and August at Lost Lake Park. At dusk, stars come out both on the big screen and in the sky. Local turntable talents warm the crowd up before the film, starting at 9 p.m.
Bring a blanket or lawn chair as well as friends and a picnic basket to start the evening off. Don’t forget warm clothes. Temperatures drop with the sun.

Lost Lake Park can only be accessed by foot or bus. An extended bus service for LUNAFliks leaves the Gondola Transit Exchange around 9 p.m. Bus service is $.50.
Film entry is $3 for LUNA members (youth ages 18-29) and $5 for non-members.
