Drilling underway at South Meager geothermal site

Drilling has commenced

Drilling has commenced on the first of two 2,500-metre deep wells to confirm the commercial viability of the South Meager Creek Geothermal Project.

Completion of both wells, which have been called MC-6 and MC-7, is due in December.

Precision Drilling, from Calgary, is the principal drilling contractor at the site, 70 kilometres north-west of Pemberton.

Construction of the access road and drill pad has been completed and the drilling and testing of each well is expected to take about 10 weeks.

This round of drilling follows a detailed review of the technical data assembled during 20 years of exploration in the area.

GeothermEx completed a report in February which classified South Meager as a "high temperature" geothermal field (average temperature 220-240ûC), with a potential development capacity of 100 Megawatts and a likely capacity of 192 MW.

This amount of energy could supply approximately 160,000 homes with electricity for a lifetime.

Having raised $21.6 million in financing since December 2003, Western GeoPower now has sufficient funds to complete this resource confirmation project, estimated to cost $14.5 million.
