Local skiers to host fund-raiser putting tournament

Whistler’s Mike Janyk and the Hume brothers, Jeff and Scott, are widely regarded as top future prospects for the Canadian Alpine Ski Team. With a little more support, they should be able to get there.

Janyk, 20, was a strong performer on the national development team last season, and was third in the slalom at the Pontiac GMC Canadian Championships in Whistler. This summer he will train with the national technical team, where he is guaranteed a few more World Cup starts.

Jeff Hume, 22, went into last season to see if there was anything left to accomplish, contemplating retirement if things didn’t start to pan out. They did, and then some.

Jeff went on to become the overall Nor-Am champion, specializing in the downhill and super-G speed events, and is currently training with the national speed team.

His younger brother Scott Hume, 19, is training with the men’s technical team after a strong season with the B.C. Ski Team. Although he will likely stay with the development team this year, he showed that he had the skills by finishing third among juniors in the men’s GS at the national championships.

That said, these three are dedicating this summer to train with the national team, and are looking for some help from the community to help them cover their team fees next season.

"Alpine Canada subsidizes us quite a bit, but there are still a few thousand dollars we have to raise," said Jeff. "I have to raise around $7,000 and Mike and Scott have to raise around $15,000. The ACA chips in around $90,000 per person on the team so to pay a little is okay. We’d rather pay nothing, but this is okay."

To raise money, Janyk and the Humes are hosting a putting tournament at the Riverside Putting Course on June 22 nd . Ideally they would have liked to have hosted a golf tournament, but because of the expense this was the next best thing. Best of all, anyone can play.

It will be a 4 p.m. shotgun start, and putters are asked to be there half and hour early. More than 100 people had already signed up as of press time, and they are expecting up to 150 by tournament day.

In addition to the putting tournament, there will be a barbecue, silent auction, draw prizes, national team paraphernalia, and prizes for the top three teams. All have been donated to the skiers by local businesses.

"It’s been unbelievable how many people have helped us out," said Jeff.

The cost for the tournament is $25 per person. You can sign up with a team of four or they will place you into a group.
