On Sept. 14 and 15, the Kelty Patrick Dennehy Foundation is hosting the Drive FORE Life charity golf tournament in Whistler to raise money to combat teen depression and suicide.

Kelty Dennehy committed suicide in March of 2001 at the age of 17 after battling depression and anxiety since his early years in high school – first at Whistler and later at Saskatchewan’s Notre Dame College. Since the first signs of depression, friends, family, doctors and psychologists tried to help Kelty, who is described as an average student, and a strong athlete who was active in hockey, snowboarding, soccer, baseball and golf. He was on antidepressants at the time of his death.

The Kelty Patrick Dennehy Foundation’s goal is to raise $2 million to educate Canadians about depression-related teenage suicide and to support and develop programs which will help in the early identification of the disease and suggest appropriate intervention. The money will enable the foundation to set up a chair at a reputable Canadian university, and the funds will be dispersed by leading experts in accordance with the foundation’s goals.

The Drive FORE Life charity golf tournament begins on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 6:30 p.m. with cocktails, a dinner, and a silent auction at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler.

The following morning, starting at 8 a.m., there will be a practice and clinic at the Nicklaus North driving range. The tournament gets underway with a shotgun start at 10 a.m.

At 3 p.m. there will be a barbecue and prizes for participants. There will also be a chance for one participant to win a car.

The cost is $500 for individual participants, including the dinner, golf clinic, barbecue, prizes and 18 holes of golf. Corporate hole sponsors are available for $3,000, including signage, a mention in promotional material, and a tax receipt.

People can attend the dinner for $100.

In addition, the Fairmont Chateau Whistler is offering an accommodation special from Sept. 13 to 15 for $125, based on double occupancy.
