Drug-induced reality

Undercover cop Bob Arctor, played by Keanu Reeves, slides into a distorted schizophrenic reality where film and animation overlap in A Scanner Darkly
, Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 7 and 9:15 p.m. at Village 8 Cinemas as part of the Whistler Film Festival Society’s Reel Alternatives Independent Film Series.

In a futuristic America where the endless and futile war on drugs is one and the same with its war on terror, Arctor is asked to spy on his friends then himself, which is the launching point for a paranoid journey into the absurd.

The story is based on the legendary science-fiction author Philip K. Dick’s own experiences, the film follows the tragedy of drug use played out like a graphic novel with live-action photography overlaid with animation.

The Warner Independent Pictures film delivers a star-studded cast with Reeves, Robert Downey Jr., Woody Harrelson and Winona Ryder. The London Times calls A Scanner Darkly “Deranged, trippy and extremely funny.”

Tickets are $8.50. Purchase a Reel Alternatives membership for $4 and save $2 on ticket prices.
