Kiljoy Spins Whistler Evan Short of Concord Dawn fame joins Dirty Beats for drum 'n' bass night on Wednesday, Dec. 12 at Tommy Africa's.

What: Concord Dawn

When: Wednesday, Dec. 12

Where: Tommy’s

Tickets: $10/$15

New Zealand drum ’n’ bass luminary Evan Short of Concord Dawn returns to Whistler for what is expected to be another sell out show of Dirty Beats Wednesday, Dec. 12 at Tommy Africa’s.

“I thought it would be a small show and I hadn’t heard him play before, only the material he produced, and I liked it, but wow, he blew us all away in the club,” said organizer Lindsay Philips. “This guy deserves a lot of respect in the DJing world.”

At least in the drum ’n’ bass world where the Kiwi more famously known as DJ Kiljoy first had his start. Influenced by DJ Aaron, one of the founders of the New Zealand drum ’n’ bass scene, Kiljoy began experimenting with the “new” sound with his fellow Concord Dawn partner in crime, Matt Harvey.

“Jungle combined a lot of the music we were into at the time,” Kiljoy said. “It was a mash up of rock, jazz, hip hop and had the energy of dance music.”

Energy was the driving force behind the countless tracks that followed, most notably Morning Light, which got their music on commercial radio, music charts and the Mixmag Cover CD.

The number of international heavyweights spinning their sound continues to grow, including the likes of Grooverider, Goldi, DJ Hype, Dieselboy and Bad Company, just to name a few.

Kiljoy has earned a fearsome reputation for his live performances with extensive tours through Asia, North America, Europe and Australia. His sound was no stranger to New Zealand dance festivals, including Big Day Out, Phat 05 and the Gathering.

Advance $10 tickets are available at the Hub Creekside, Cyberweb and Tommy’s. Otherwise tickets are $15 at the door.

Bad Boy house never been so good

He may have a bad boy reputation, but Bad Boy Bill is working harder than ever with up to 150 gigs annually, traveling everywhere from Peru and Spain to New York and finally Whistler on Monday, Dec. 10 at Garfinkel’s.

This isn’t the first time this Chicago boy has dished out his legendary house and electro music to our mountain town. He last spun the DJ Experience with Playboy starlet Rachel Sterling and Dimitri of Paris at the Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival.

It was one hot and steamy sold out night, a sign of things to come.

“House music in general does,” Bad Boy Bill said of the genre’s sexy feel. “I think that is what is great about it. It’s a love music — as opposed to gangster rap. Girls like dancing to it, so it brings that sexuality out.”

Bad Boy Bill’s house music was recently lauded in BPM Magazine, which ranked him as America’s Favourite House DJ in 2006. He was also featured more recently as number 38 on the Top 100 DJs of 2007 in DJ Magazine.

It’s been a busy year for the hardworking DJ, producer and businessman. The jetsetter has been touring the globe with his new DVD and mix CD Behind the Decks, Live as well as working on his dance music download company beatport.com, which will soon be re-launched as beatsource.com for hip hop fans.

Until then, as his tune of 2007 says, it’s “All about House Music” in Whistler Monday.
