Lucky duck wins trip to Mexico By Andrew Mitchell A raging creek, a cheering crowd, and 2,087 little rubber ducks, bobbing their way down stream for a chance at the grand prize: an all expense paid trip for two to Mexico. With a huge lead of over 3 metres, Duck #825 was the first down Fitzsimmons Creek and over the Lorimer Road finish line in Monday’s eighth annual Big Brothers/Big Sisters Duck Race, winning Steve Ellis of Unionville, Ontario, the Mexican vacation. Duck #739 finished second, earning Salyaz Kham a signed Edmonton Oilers jersey that was donated by Boston Pizza. Local Whistlerite Andy Petersen, owner of third place duck #763, will receive a mystery prize at a later date. This year’s Big Brothers/Big Sisters Duck Race, held on Thanksgiving Monday, raised more than $10,000 for the charity, which matches children of single parent homes to adult role models in the community. Greg Newton, co-director of fund-raising for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Whistler & Pemberton, was pleased with the turnout. "Not only did the children have a great time watching the ducks race down the river, parents, volunteers and other spectators were enthused about it as well," says Newton. "It's always fun to see all the people running along Fitzsimmons Creek, cheering on the ducks."
