The Duffy Lake Road between Pemberton and Lillooet will get eight kilometres of new blacktop over the summer, upgrading the section between the avalanche gate at Blowdown Creek and the Long Cayoosh Bridge.

Okanagan Aggregates won the $1.76 million contract and work is expected to get underway in the next few weeks and wrap up by the end of September. Work will take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. with single lane alternating traffic and delays of up to 10 minutes, as well as slower highway speeds while the work is underway. With delays it could take 30 minutes to clear the work zone.

"Duffy Lake Road is a vital link for transporting commercial goods, as well as providing access for residents and for tourism," said West Vancouver-Sea to Sky MLA Joan McIntyre. "By targeting infrastructure stimulus funds to this project we can get to work quickly to improve this particular street of highway south of Lillooet."

The project is being partially funded by the federal government's $4 billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund. Since March 2009 almost 400 projects across B.C. have received half a billion in funding.

Whistler is also getting another layer of asphalt over the summer, it was recently announced. The highway from Function Junction was widened last summer in preparation for a third Olympic lane, but the mix of old and new road sections and two previous changes to the placement of the centre line required additional surfacing.
