DVDs @ your library

The Whistler Public Library currently has a very well used and much appreciated video collection. As we plan for a new facility, we have surveyed our patrons and asked what changes to the collection they would like. An overwhelming number requested a DVD film collection. So…

We listened and are very excited about our new, albeit small, collection of current and classic films on DVD. Come to the library on Saturday, June 8 at noon for the official "unveiling" of the collection. DVDs will go out for seven days and will be limited to two per patron until the collection is larger.

DVD, which once stood for digital video disc or digital versatile disc, is the next generation of optical disc storage technology. It is essentially a bigger, faster CD that can hold cinema-like video, better-than-CD audio, and computer data. DVD aims to encompass home entertainment, computers, and business information with a single digital format, eventually replacing audio CD, videotape, laserdisc, CD-ROM, and video game cartridges.

The advantage of such a collection is the longer life of the DVD as well as the ability to provide very current releases to our patrons. Videos are becoming less and less available as the future of recordings lies in this new format. We are constantly striving to respond to the needs and requests of our community and know this will be a very welcome and practical addition to our collection of materials in various formats.

Many of the DVDs in the collection are classics, such as Lawrence of Arabia, Ben Hur, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Sound of Music and Out of Africa . The newer discs are those which have won awards and/or have numerous special effects, such as The Matrix, Jurassic Park, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, The Perfect Storm and Jaws. Some of the advantages of DVDs are the "making of" documentaries, interviews with directors, cast members, crew and the restoring of previously damaged film.

So...come by the Library on Saturday and check out a DVD!
