Ecstasy alert in Pemberton

More to house parties than alcohol

Youths are having their drinks spiked with ecstasy at house parties.

According to a Pemberton RCMP bulletin issued Sept 12, there have been two recent incidents of drink spiking that resulted in two youth nearly overdosing. The RCMP is cautioning individuals who attend youth house parties to be extra careful and not leave their beverages unattended.

Ecstasy is a chemical compound known as MDMA. Ecstasy creates a feeling of energetic euphoria by flooding the brain with serotonin. User risks run the gamut from dehydration to renal failure. As well, users may have reactions to other toxic chemicals that may be added into the ecstasy tablets. While long-term effects of the drug are unknown, UK studies have suggested that the drug can lead to severe ongoing depression as it can dramatically impede the body’s ability to produce serotonin.

Anyone with information about who the suspects are is urged to contact the Pemberton RCMP at 604-894-6634.
