Fire crews are still working to contain a blaze that first broke out west of Pemberton last weekend.

The Elaho wildfire, located approximately 67 kilometres west of Spud Valley, was discovered June 14, and has since spread to an estimated 700-hectare area.

As of Saturday, June 20, B.C.’s Wildfire Management Branch indicated the fire is 25-per-cent contained, and is warning that continued hot, dry weather in the forecast “will likely increase fire activity” on Sunday.

The fire is said to be in “very steep and inaccessible terrain” in a densely wooded area that has been experiencing “periodic inversions,” which hold the smoke close to the ground.

All recreationalists are advised to avoid areas in and around the fire due to active fire conditions, danger trees, and ongoing operational efforts. There are currently 94 firefighters and three helicopters on scene.

Road access is restricted along the Elaho River Valley Road at the 53-kilometre mark. If it is necessary to drive within the surrounding area, motorists are asked to use caution and slow down.

The fire is believed to be human-caused and remains under investigation. It is not suspected that industrial activity was the cause.
